For Jeremiah Wells, basketball became more than a game the moment he first picked it up at six years old. What started as childhood fun quickly turned into a passion — one that continues to grow as he takes his first steps into high school basketball at DePaul Catholic High School in Wayne, New Jersey. Now a 5’8” freshman point guard, Wells is already showing maturity beyond his years, embracing the responsibility that comes with running a team.

Wells models his game after NBA Hall of Famer Jason Kidd and current star Darius Garland, both playmaking point guards known for their ability to control the tempo of the game, read the defense, and put their teammates in position to succeed. “I like being the one who sets the pace and creates easy looks for others,” he says, a mindset that defines his approach at the point guard position.
Wells put that mentality on display this fall at the High School All-American Showcase in New York. His main objective was to show that he could control the pace of the game as the point guard. Against high-level competition, he focused on organizing the offense, making smart decisions, and generating scoring opportunities for his teammates- proving that even as a freshman, he understands the importance of leadership at the point guard position.
One of his main goals for the remainder of the season is to learn as much as possible from his veteran teammates and implement those things into his game. “We have a lot of older guys on the team, so I just want to take in as much as I can from them," he says.
By the end of his freshman season, Wells hopes to average 16 points per game, 8-9 assists, and 3-4 rebounds, all while playing stellar defense and contributing in any way his team needs. His daily routine reflects that ambition: an hour of practice after school followed by an hour in the weight room, building both skill and strength to handle the physical demands of the season.
While Wells is very early in his high school career, he did say that he hopes to play college basketball in the future. He does not have a dream school in mind yet, but he expressed significant interest in playing at a West Coast school one day. Whichever school lands him will be getting a player who brings a high level of energy and intensity, motivates his teammates, and is committed to winning above all else.
For now, Jeremiah Wells is focused on the present: learning, leading, and contributing to the growth and development of the DePaul Catholic basketball program. As a freshman with poise, confidence, and a true point guard’s mindset, his journey is just beginning — and it’s one worth watching.
