Player Spotlight: Joshua Martin Is Embracing a New Opportunity

Introduction
Joshua Martin is a determined point guard from Far Hills, New Jersey, preparing for a new chapter at Mercersburg Academy in Pennsylvania. Standing at 6'2" as part of the Class of 2028, Martin has been around the game his entire life and began taking it seriously in fifth grade. With strong passing and defensive skills, he is focused on continuing to develop his offense and proving what he can bring to the court.
Background
Martin has been playing basketball since he was ten years old, but fifth grade marked the point when he began approaching the game with a greater level of commitment. This season, his high school team enjoyed a successful year, although Martin did not receive as much playing time as he wanted. He has used opportunities with AAU basketball and the High School All-American Showcase to continue competing and showcase his skills against other talented players.
Development
Martin's commitment to improvement continues throughout the entire year. He trains year-round, with his workload decreasing slightly during the season because of games and travel. He works on his shooting every day, while his offseason routine includes strength and performance training four days a week, basketball workouts three days a week, and private training twice a week. His consistent approach to training reflects his desire to prepare himself for a larger role at the next level.
One of the biggest challenges Martin has faced has been dealing with frustration when his hard work has not translated into playing time. Rather than allowing that frustration to stop him, he has continued working and believing that his effort will eventually pay off. Martin also recently transferred from Don Bosco Prep and is excited about his new opportunity at Mercersburg Academy, where he will compete in the Mid-Atlantic Prep League (MAPL).
Influences
One of Martin's biggest influences is his new coach, Sean Crocker. Coach Crocker has already made an impact on him through his ability to build a family-like connection with the team while continuing to push his players to improve. Martin also credits his former Don Bosco coach, Kevin Diverio, for making every player feel valued and for providing support and guidance during his time there.
Goals
Looking ahead, Martin wants to improve his offensive skill set and decision-making with the ball in his hands. His biggest strengths are his passing and defense, and he hopes to become a more complete offensive player. After high school, Martin wants to play college basketball wherever he can earn an opportunity. Some of his dream schools include Michigan, North Carolina, Duke, Syracuse, Vanderbilt, Alabama, and Kentucky. Over the next year, his goals are to continue building his confidence, become a great shooter, and improve his basketball IQ. Long term, he hopes to play professionally in the NBA or overseas.
Closing
In March, Martin attended the High School All-American Showcase in Manalapan, New Jersey. He described the event as a great experience and an opportunity to gain exposure in front of college coaches. For the coaches and scouts in attendance, he hopes they noticed his defense, leadership, and ability to get to his spots on offense. As he begins this next chapter at Mercersburg Academy, Martin is focused on turning his experiences into motivation and making the most of the opportunities ahead. With his year-round work ethic and determination to keep improving, he is ready to continue building his game and pursuing his goals.
