Introduction
Julian Newbill is a determined young point guard continuing to develop his game at Union Preparatory Academy in Monroe, North Carolina. Standing at 5’2” as part of the Class of 2029, Newbill brings relentless energy, passion, and work ethic to the court. Even while facing challenges early in his high school career, he remains fully committed to improving and finding his role as a leader and contributor.

Background
Newbill's basketball journey began when he was 5 years old; his father introduced him to the sport. Since then, basketball has become a major part of his life. During his freshman season, Newbill made the varsity basketball team, but his playing time was very limited. However, he did not get discouraged and used it as motivation to continue improving his game with the goal of earning a larger role on JV next season rather than remaining on varsity with limited opportunity.
Development
What separates Newbill is his commitment to training and becoming a great player. During the season, he works out two to three times per day. Five days a week, he wakes up at 4 a.m. and is in the gym as soon as it opens at 5 a.m., focusing on basketball skills and speed training. After school, he does another workout focused on either weightlifting or cardio. While his work ethic is very strong, he also understands the importance of rest and recovery, ensuring his body can keep up with his demanding routine. His dedication reflects a player who is serious about long-term growth and development.
Influences
Newbill credits most of his development to his father, who has been his biggest mentor and trainer since the beginning. Through his guidance, Newbill has built his skills, discipline, and mindset, learning to push through adversity and stay focused on his goals. He also looks up to NBA star Kyrie Irving, whose elite ball-handling and finishing ability inspire Newbill’s style of play. Newbill considers ball-handling to be the strongest part of his game right now.
Goals
Looking ahead, Newbill has big aspirations for his future. He wants to play Division I college basketball and then in the NBA. Currently, Duke is his top option due to its strong basketball tradition, but he will keep all options open as his high school career progresses. In the short term, his goal is to improve his basketball IQ and mental toughness. He believes that improving those skills will help him overcome his height limitations and maximize his impact on the court.
Closing
Earlier this year, Newbill competed at the High School All-American Showcase in Greensboro, North Carolina, where he faced strong competition and gained valuable exposure in front of college coaches and scouts. Despite playing with new teammates, he adapted quickly and was able to work effectively with them during games. In addition to games, he did drills focused on dribbling, passing, and shooting to help sharpen his fundamentals while displaying his strengths. More than anything, Newbill hopes coaches noticed his ball-handling ability, work ethic, and passion for the game. With his relentless drive and commitment to improvement, Julian Newbill is proving that size doesn’t define a player — effort and mindset do.
