Introduction
Coryon Dortch is a promising young guard continuing to build his game at Urban Prep Charter Academy in Chicago, Illinois. Standing at 5'8" as part of the Class of 2029, Dortch has already earned experience at both the junior varsity and varsity levels while building confidence and improving his overall game. Dortch is a competitor who prides himself on his shooting ability, defensive effort, and willingness to do whatever his team needs to win.
Background
Originally from Chicago, Illinois, Dortch first started playing basketball in third grade. What began as attending summer camps eventually turned into a true passion for the game. As he spent more time around basketball, he began taking it seriously and fell in love with the process of improving his skills and going against strong competition.
Development
This past season, Dortch spent time on both the junior varsity and varsity teams. He was a starter on JV and came off the bench on varsity, using the season as an opportunity to grow both as a player and teammate. During the season, his training routine involves lifting sessions on Mondays and Tuesdays, conditioning on Wednesdays, and games on Thursdays. In the offseason, he continues lifting daily while taking part in organized workouts focused on skill development, ball-handling, and shooting. One challenge he faced this season was adjusting to a new school and building his confidence, but he used those experiences as motivation to continue improving mentally and physically.
Influences
Dortch credits much of his development to Coach Juan Brown, who helped him gain confidence and become more comfortable with making mistakes while continuing to trust his game. He also mentioned Coach JB as a major influence because of the work ethic and discipline he demands every day. Their guidance has helped Dortch continue sharpening his skills and understanding of the game.
Goals
Looking ahead, Dortch hopes to play Division I college basketball after high school. Some schools he is interested in include Auburn, Clemson, DePaul, Ohio State, UCLA, USC, and Kentucky. Over the next year, one of his biggest goals is to improve his vertical jumping ability so he can start dunking in games. Long-term, he hopes to play professionally in the NBA before eventually becoming a Division I college coach. A few NBA players he looks up to are NBA great LeBron James and rising star Anthony Edwards.
Closing
In March, Dortch attended the High School All-American Showcase in Chicago, Illinois. He enjoyed the experience and learned a lot about what it takes to play at the Division I level. It made him want to come back next year and showcase his improvement in front of Division I coaches. For those coaches and scouts in attendance, he hopes they noticed his shooting and defense. As he continues developing his confidence, skill set, and leadership abilities, Dortch is determined to keep building toward a strong future on the court.
