Introduction
DeGerard Harris is an up-and-coming guard continuing to build his game at Wayne Memorial High School in Wayne, Michigan. Standing at 5'11" as part of the Class of 2027, Harris has already shown the ability to be a team player and contribute at the varsity level. Now, he is focused on taking the next step in his development as he works toward earning a starting role and continuing to elevate his game.
Background
Harris started playing basketball when he was seven years old. He initially viewed the sport as a way to have fun and escape the pressures of school and everyday life, and over time, that hobby turned into a passion. This past season, Harris came off the bench for Wayne Memorial's varsity team and played an important role as the team advanced to the Elite Eight before falling to rival Brother Rice High School. He is using that experience as motivation to work harder in hopes of earning a starting spot on varsity next season.
Development
Harris approaches his development with a strong work ethic and a commitment to continuous improvement. During the season, his training routine involves practicing seven days a week, conducting walkthroughs the day before games, and studying film to identify areas where he and his team can improve. In the offseason, Harris continues to train every day, often staying after workouts to get additional shots up or focusing on recovery to keep his body prepared for the demands of competition. One of the biggest challenges Harris faced was breaking his wrist during his sophomore year and missing that entire summer. After undergoing surgery, he worked his way back onto the court by late August. He also faced the challenge of transferring schools, an adjustment that required him to adapt to a new environment and team culture.
Influences
Harris' biggest influence has been his AAU coach, who has been with him since his freshman year and pushed him to become the best player he can be. Harris also values the relationships he has built with other coaches who continue to support and guide him whenever needed. As he continues developing, his primary focus is improving his three-point shooting. His biggest strengths are his defense, getting downhill, and drawing fouls.
Goals
Looking ahead, Harris wants to play college basketball and is open to any opportunity available to him. Over the next year, his goal is to improve every aspect of his game and earn a starting position on varsity. Long-term, he hopes to play professionally, whether in the NBA or overseas. If that does not work out, he still wants to remain involved in sports in some capacity. Harris also draws inspiration from NBA stars like Cade Cunningham, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and LeBron James, players whose leadership, skill, and competitive drive he admires.
Closing
In March, Harris attended the High School All-American Showcase in Detroit, Michigan. It was his first showcase, and he really enjoyed the experience and the level of competition at the event. He adjusted quickly to new teammates and made sure to get them involved. For the coaches and scouts in attendance, he hopes they noticed that he is a team-first player who gets everyone involved and takes pride in his defense. As he continues to develop and gain experience, DeGerard Harris remains determined to prove that his hard work and team-first mentality can help him reach the next level.
