Player Spotlight: Jonah Fineman Turns Setbacks Into Strength

By Jake Sands- April 17, 2026

Introduction

Jonah Fineman is a determined guard continuing to develop his game at iPrep Academy North in Ives Estates, Florida. Standing at 5’9” and part of the Class of 2029, Fineman brings a strong mix of shooting, defensive effort, and court awareness. Despite facing early adversity in his high school career, he remains focused on growth and proving himself as a reliable contributor on the court.

Background

Fineman’s basketball journey began at just four years old, and the game has been a consistent part of his life ever since. However, this past season presented a major challenge for him. A strained upper back kept him out for most of the season. He was unable to move his arms for a month and could not dribble a ball for two months. While the injury kept him off the court, it ultimately fueled his motivation to come back stronger and more prepared for the next opportunity.

Development

Fineman follows a very structured routine during the basketball season. He attends the gym on scheduled days and then goes to LA Fitness to work on form shooting and ball-handling. As a smaller guard, he believes that his shot needs to be the most reliable part of his game. In the offseason, his training intensifies even more, allowing him to fully focus on skill development without the pressure of games. He has also worked to improve his left hand and mid-range scoring, aiming to become a more complete and versatile offensive player.

Influences

One of the biggest influences in Fineman’s journey has been his AAU coach, who challenged him to step outside of his comfort zone. His coach saw him as the most physical player on the team, so he asked him to play center, forcing him to compete physically against players much taller than him. That experience taught him that basketball isn’t just about skill, but also about effort, toughness, and mindset. Fineman also draws inspiration from players like Klay Thompson, as well as Amen Thompson and Ausar Thompson, admiring their defensive intensity and the path they took to reach the next level.

Goals

Looking ahead, Fineman has clear aspirations for his future. He wants to play college basketball and then professionally, whether in the NBA or overseas. Schools like the University of Miami, University of Florida, and Michigan stand out to him for their strong programs and culture. In the short term, his goals are to make the varsity team, earn a starting role, and prove he can be the number- one option for his team. Fineman believes that his strengths of shooting, defense, and court vision will help him reach that level as he continues to develop.

Closing

In February, Fineman competed at the High School All-American Showcase in Miami, Florida, where he gained valuable experience against older and more advanced players. The event allowed him to test his skills against varsity-level competition while learning more about the game. He adapted quickly to new teammates, learning their tendencies and using that knowledge to set them up for scoring opportunities. Most importantly, he displayed his mindset as a player motivated to improve and ready to contribute at a higher level. With his resilience, work ethic, and commitment to growth, Jonah Fineman is turning adversity into a foundation for future success.
