Player Spotlight: Jonathan Eriksson Sharpens His Game Through Discipline and Opportunity

By Jake Sands- April 28, 2026

Introduction

Jonathan Eriksson is a dedicated point guard continuing to refine his game at Skyline High School in Oakland, California. A member of the Class of 2026, Eriksson has developed into a reliable floor general known for his ability to shoot, defend, and create opportunities for his teammates. As he wraps up his high school career, he is focused on taking the next step and proving he can compete at the collegiate level.

Background

Eriksson’s basketball journey began later than most, as he first started playing at the age of 12. Early on, he admits that he did not put much effort into the game, but that changed as he began to improve and experience success on the court. The feeling of playing well fueled his passion, pushing him to take basketball seriously and commit to his development. Over time, that shift in mindset helped him grow into the player he is today.

Development

Eriksson's growth has been driven by a consistent training routine. During his high school season, he starts every day with a one-hour workout session before school, followed by team practice later in the day. Even after practice ends, he stays later to get an additional 100 shots up. If there's a day with no practice, Eriksson does additional workouts and makes sure to lift weights at least three times a week. In the offseason, he still does the morning workouts, and he increases weightlifting and shooting work to five times a week. This dedication has translated into strong on-court performance, as he shoots the ball well, defends effectively, and facilitates for his teammates at Skyline High School.

Influences

One of the most important influences in Eriksson’s development has been his former middle school coach. Their long-term relationship has helped Eriksson stay consistent in his training and continue refining the details of his game. He has also faced challenges along the way, including transferring schools and adjusting to new teammates, but those experiences have helped him grow both as a player and as a leader.

Goals

Looking ahead, Eriksson wants to play basketball at the collegiate level. He plans to begin at a smaller program and work toward transferring to a Division I school as he develops further. A few local schools have caught his interest, such as Merritt College and Chabot College, both known for having strong basketball programs. After college, Eriksson wants to play professionally, whether in the NBA or overseas. On the court, he is looking to improve his ability to score off of the pick-and-roll, aiming to become more aggressive as a shooter while maintaining his strength as a passer.

Closing

Earlier this year, Eriksson participated in the High School All-American Showcase in Seattle, Washington. During the event, he faced high-level competition and participated in drills focused on ball-handling, passing, and shooting. The experience pushed him to elevate his game and further develop his confidence as a point guard. Most importantly, he used the opportunity to display his ability to create scoring opportunities for his teammates and make the right decisions.
